Your ride from Kahului Airport (OGG) is part of the Maui itinerary, not an administrative detail after the flight. Wailea, Kīhei, Kāʻanapali, Kapalua, and Upcountry create very different transportation needs, and the best airport transfer depends on what you plan to do after check-in.
Start with your accommodation area and luggage, then decide whether you need a vehicle for the whole stay, selected days, or not at all.
OGG ground transportation at a glance
| Option | Useful when | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Airport shuttle | You want resort-area service without driving | Provider route, stops, and schedule determine convenience |
| Taxi | You want a direct point-to-point transfer | Fare depends on destination and traffic |
| Maui Bus | Your route matches the limited airport service and your luggage qualifies | Airport routes are limited and baggage size is restricted |
| Rental car | Your itinerary requires frequent independent driving | Parking, unused days, fuel, and driver fatigue add to cost |
The airport shuttle serves many resort areas
Hawaiʻi DOT currently lists SpeediShuttle service from OGG, with an airport counter in baggage claim operating about 9 a.m.–9 p.m. under current guidance. Service includes many Maui resort areas, including Kīhei, Wailea, and Kāʻanapali.
Confirm the current route and pickup instructions before travel. A shared shuttle can take longer than a private vehicle because other passengers may be dropped first.
Taxi guide fares show how much location matters
OGG publishes guide fares rather than guaranteed prices. Current airport examples include about $57 to Wailea, roughly $87 to Kāʻanapali, about $105 to Kapalua, and approximately $33–$55 to Kīhei.
Use those figures only as planning context. Traffic, meter rules, exact address, and fare updates can change the actual amount. Ask the current provider for the applicable fare structure.
Maui Bus is not a universal airport-to-resort solution
The airport’s current Maui Bus guidance lists Routes 40 and 35 serving OGG, with service roughly every 90 minutes. It also publishes a luggage limit of one bag no larger than about 22 × 14 × 9 inches.
That can work for a traveler whose route and luggage fit the system. It is not equivalent to a direct hotel transfer for a family carrying several checked bags.
Rental cars make sense when the itinerary makes them useful
Maui’s geography means many travelers eventually need a car for Haleakalā, Upcountry, selected beaches, or other independent outings. That does not automatically mean you need the car from the minute the plane lands.
Compare your actual days with our Maui rental-car guide. If your first two days are built around the resort, paying for parking and rental time may not improve the trip.
Your accommodation area changes the transfer decision
Wailea, Kīhei, West Maui, and Upcountry are not interchangeable labels. Use our where-to-stay-on-Maui guide before finalizing transportation.
For a full-week route, the seven-day Maui itinerary helps you see which days actually depend on a vehicle.
Do not schedule a demanding drive immediately after a long flight
Arrival day should absorb baggage delays, rental-car lines, traffic, grocery stops, and check-in. A late arrival is a poor time to begin a long scenic drive or reservation-sensitive outdoor activity.
If you are heading toward Hāna or Haleakalā, give those routes their own well-rested day.
Compare the complete transfer cost, not just one fare
A taxi can look expensive until you divide it among several travelers and compare it with a multi-day rental car, resort parking, fuel, and unused vehicle time. A bus can look inexpensive until luggage or a final transfer makes it impractical.
Put every option into the same comparison: total group price, door-to-door time, luggage handling, number of transfers, and whether you will need another vehicle the following morning.
Arrival day should match the destination
A Wailea arrival and a Kāʻanapali arrival create different drive times. Do not book a restaurant, luau, or sunset activity with a narrow margin after landing. Flights, baggage, road conditions, and check-in can all shift.
Give yourself permission to make the first evening boring. A grocery stop, simple dinner, and early night can set up a much better first full day.
Departure morning is a separate transportation plan
If you rented a vehicle, include fuel and return time before airport check-in. If you are using a shuttle or taxi, confirm pickup the day before and leave enough time for other passengers, traffic, and airport lines.
Do not make Haleakalā, Hāna, or a distant beach the last activity before an afternoon flight unless the timing remains genuinely comfortable.
