Allerton Garden and McBryde Garden share a visitor center in Lāwaʻi Valley on Kauaʻi’s South Shore, but they are not the same experience. Allerton emphasizes designed garden rooms, landscape architecture, art, history, and famous fig trees. McBryde centers plant conservation, native Hawaiian flora, food plants, and a more self-directed garden experience.

The short version

Choose Allerton ifChoose McBryde if
You want a guided designed-garden experienceYou want to explore plant collections more independently
Landscape design and garden history matter mostNative plants, conservation, and ethnobotany matter most
You like a structured group tourYou prefer a self-guided pace within a timed visit

Allerton Garden

The standard guided Allerton experience is approximately 2.5 hours and requires a shuttle from the Lāwaʻi Gardens Visitor Center. Current listed pricing is about $65 for adults and $32.50 for children ages 2–12. Tour days and products vary, and reservations are required.

Choose it if you want a guide explaining the garden’s designed spaces, history, art, plantings, and film-location stories.

McBryde Garden

McBryde contains major native Hawaiian plant collections, a breadfruit agroforest, canoe plants, and rare tropical species. The standard self-guided tour uses timed shuttle entry and exit and is approximately two hours.

Current listed self-guided pricing is about $35 for adults and $17.50 for children ages 2–12. Availability changes by day and season.

Both require the shuttle

You do not simply park beside either garden. Tours begin at the Lāwaʻi Gardens Visitor Center near Spouting Horn, where you check in and board a shuttle. NTBG asks visitors to arrive roughly 30 minutes before departure because buses leave on schedule.

Footwear is not optional

NTBG requires closed-toe shoes or secure hiking sandals with appropriate straps for Allerton and McBryde tours. These are outdoor gardens with uneven terrain and weather exposure, not indoor conservatories.

The combined tour can be more efficient

The “Best of Both Worlds” tour combines highlights of Allerton and McBryde in one guided experience of about 2.5 hours. Current adult pricing is around $70. This can make sense if you want both design history and conservation interpretation but do not have two separate half-days.

Weather can change the format

Kauaʻi weather is variable, and NTBG has wet-weather procedures. Bring rain protection, water, sun protection, insect repellent, and footwear that can handle damp paths. If flood or emergency conditions force a closure, follow NTBG’s direct communication rather than driving to the visitor center hoping the tour still runs.

Pair the garden with one South Shore stop

The visitor center is across from Spouting Horn, and Poʻipū is nearby. A garden plus one coastal stop and a meal is a full, balanced half-day or day. Do not book another distant North Shore reservation immediately afterward.

Use our Poʻipū Beach guide if you want beach time after a garden visit.

Which garden is better for first-time visitors?

If you want a guide to shape the experience and explain designed landscapes, Allerton is the simpler choice. If you enjoy reading plant labels, moving at your own pace, and focusing on conservation and useful plants, McBryde may fit better. The combined tour is useful when neither priority clearly wins.

Families should compare attention span with tour length

A structured 2.5-hour guided garden can be excellent for an interested older child and difficult for a toddler who needs to move independently. Ask about restroom timing, shade, stroller restrictions, and whether leaving early is possible before choosing a tour solely because children receive a reduced price.

Mobility needs should be discussed before booking

Shuttle transportation reduces some walking, but the gardens still involve outdoor terrain. Contact NTBG for the exact route, grade, surface, seating, and assistance available for the product you are considering. A self-guided tour is not automatically easier if its route includes more independent walking.

What to bring

  • Required secure footwear
  • Water
  • Sun and rain protection
  • Insect repellent if you use it
  • A small day bag rather than beach luggage
  • Enough schedule buffer to arrive before shuttle check-in
